So another Friday game night has come and gone. This time around we had 4 people, which is a perfect amount for a whole slew of games.
We took a look at the new game King of Tokyo, a game designed by Richard Garfield of Magic the Gathering fame. The artwork is really fun, with great big brightly colored monsters as the centerpieces. Looks like it will be a lot of fun, but we didn’t end up playing since we weren’t in the mood to learn a new game.
Instead, we opened the night with a round of Quarriors, which was highly entertaining as always. The game was largely uneventful, but I noticed one trend as I sat in last place the whole game. How you start of the game has a very strong impact on the rest of the game. If you fail early, it is almost impossible to catch up. I was consistently crushed by my opponents larger creatures because I had poor rolls on my first two rounds. From there I couldn’t seem to catch up. Oh well.
After one game of Quarriors, we moved on to Talisman, the classic board game published by Fantasy Flight. It never fails to amaze me how massive this game is. We played with one expansion board, The Highlands, and it was huge. I can’t imagine how long a game would take with all of the expansions in play. As it was we quit after 4 hours with no player close to finishing.
During the game, Greg made a great point, calling Talisman, ‘Monopoly for Nerds.’ There is a lot less strategy involved than luck, and each turn you basically just move around the board hoping to gather something that’ll give you an advantage, or hurt your opponents. It is a fun change of pace.
